South Korea's President declares emergency martial law amid parliamentary disputes

In an unexpected late-night television speech on Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law and accused the nation's biggest opposition party of anti-state and North Korean sympathies.

Yoon did not specify the precise actions that would be done. He referenced a vote to remove top prosecutors and reject a government budget proposal made by the opposition Democratic Party, which holds a majority in parliament.

The opposition's acts were described by Yoon as "clear anti-state behavior aimed at inciting rebellion." He added that these actions had "turned the National Assembly into a den of criminals and paralyzed state affairs."

He characterized martial law as an essential action to eliminate what he termed “shameless pro-North anti-state forces.” He defended this decision as crucial for safeguarding the freedoms and security of the populace, ensuring the nation's sustainability, and bequeathing a stable country to future generations.

The speaker of parliament is en route to the assembly and intends to call a session, as reported by local broadcaster YTN TV. However, Yonhap news agency has indicated that access to parliament is obstructed, preventing lawmakers from entering.

Yoon accused the opposition of transforming the country into a “drug haven” and fostering a state of chaos that threatens public safety and well-being. He further asserted that the Democratic Party was seeking to dismantle the liberal democratic framework, stating, “The National Assembly has evolved into a monster that undermines liberal democracy, and the nation is in a fragile condition, on the brink of collapse.”

The National Security Council spokesperson informed Fox News Digital that the Administration is maintaining communication with the government of the Republic of Korea and is closely monitoring the evolving situation.

In his address, Yoon did not specify the particular actions that would be implemented. According to Reuters, the Yonha news agency reported that access to the parliament building was being restricted.

Opposition leader Lee Jae-myung stated during an online livestream, "The country will be governed by tanks, armored personnel carriers, and armed soldiers. The economy of the Republic of Korea is on the brink of irreversible collapse. I urge my fellow citizens to gather at the National Assembly."

He guaranteed the public, stating, "We will eradicate the anti-state elements and return the nation to a state of normalcy as swiftly as we can." While recognizing that martial law may lead to certain inconveniences, he committed to taking measures to lessen its effects on the populace.
